Thank you for attending MacTutor Live! It was a conference session where we tried to do something unique-give you more than just a place to sit down and a pile of notes. So in a order to thank you for attending, we are giving you this disk FREE!
This disk contains the materials used in MacTutor Live! It has source code for you to use right away. Contained on this disk, you will find four self-extracting files that correspond to the four speakers. Just copy the file to where you want it, double click on the file, and that's it! They are as follows:
• THINK vs MPW: Many people use THINK for its rapid development time and then use MPW for their final version (some say MPW generates better code). Here are the secrets to writing code so as to be compatible in both environments.
• GIFfy: Image files (from TV, slides, etc.) are getting larger and larger. GIF is fast becoming a standard for compressed image files. Learn how they can be used in your application.
• Hyper_Vista and TIMS: Databases are complex. Creating user interfaces that are simple to use is a challenge. TIMS is a technical information database. It is based on hyper_Vista, HyperCard routines that access db_Vista III's powerful database commands.
• VCR & Popup Menu CDEFs: Here are two super control definitions. One is a 3D button that is very easy to modify and loaded with options. The other CDEF makes use of popup menus. Now you can have popup menus with the ease of a control; they support color, icons, system 7 styles and more.
The above files are for you to use and distribute to your friends freely, as long as you follow any individual instructions and give credit to the author when you use them in your software.

MacTutor is a monthly programming journal filled with pages of source code. We have been in the business of helping the developer for over six years. We would like to help you with your work. I'm sure you'll find a subscription to MacTutor worth it in the very first month. If you are not currently a subscriber, or you know someone else who is not, we have included an electronic coupon in MacPaint format (created with SuperPaint) that you can print out for $5 off a subscription (journal or source code disk). Please feel free to print out as many as you would like for your friends; I'm sure they would love to get monthly Macintosh programming tips at a $5 discount.
Also, if you have something that you figured out and would like to share it with the Macintosh programming community, you might consider writing an article of your own. Please feel free to write us and request for an author kit. And if you have a product for developers, MacTutor is a great medium to advertise with.
